Swanage Railway

Family Days Out

A heritage railway through the Purbeck hills from Norden to Swanage via Corfe Castle, with steam and diesel trains. Dogs travel free on a short lead.

Three stations and a castle

The Swanage Railway runs full-size steam and heritage diesel trains along five and a half miles of line between Norden, Corfe Castle and the Victorian seaside town of Swanage, with a station at Harman’s Cross and a halt at Herston. A single journey takes 25 minutes. Which type of locomotive pulls your train depends on the day’s timetable, so check the timetable on the railway’s website if you have a preference.

From closure to rebuild

The line opened on 20 May 1885 and lost its passenger service in January 1972. The Swanage Railway Society was formed in May 1972 to bring trains back. A short length of line reopened in 1979, and in 1995 trains ran again from Swanage to Corfe Castle and on to Norden.

Using it from a cottage

The easiest way to ride is to park at Purbeck Park beside Norden station, a 350-space council car park where charges apply, and take the train down to Swanage. Parking in Swanage can be limited, especially in the summer and regatta weeks. Corfe Castle and Herston stations have no parking, so reach them on foot or by train.

Get off at Corfe Castle station for Corfe Castle, or ride to Swanage: the Main Beach car park is a five-minute walk from the station, so Swanage Beach is close. The nearest National Rail station is Wareham, and morebus services run to the forecourt at Swanage station.

Dogs, buggies and food

Dogs travel free when kept on a short lead. Pushchairs are welcome, though space can be tight on busy trains. There are refreshment buffets at Norden and Swanage stations and the Whistlestop café at Corfe Castle, plus picnic areas along the line. Ticket prices and running days vary, so check them with the railway before you travel; you can also phone the railway on 01929 425800.
