Burton Bradstock

Thatched village half a mile from Chesil Beach

Burton Bradstock is a village in the Bride Valley, about 2.5 miles south-east of Bridport and half a mile inland from Chesil Beach, near the mouth of the River Bride. It has 16th and 17th century thatched cottages and a parish church, St Mary the Virgin, whose building dates largely from the late 14th or early 15th century.

The village has a post office and shop on Mill Street, next to the Three Horseshoes pub, and a community library by the village green. The post office is owned jointly by the Parish Council and the Village Society.

Hive Beach is the main beach for the village. It is part of Chesil Beach, a shingle ridge that runs 18 miles between West Bay and Portland, with a gap in the cliffs where the National Trust has a car park. The Hive Beach Cafe provides refreshments. Cliffs along this coast rise to about 150 feet, and the Bronze Age burial mound of Bind Barrow is a short uphill walk from the car park. See Chesil Beach for the beach in general.

From Hive Beach, a cliff-top walk on the South West Coast Path heads west to West Bay East Beach and on to Thorncombe Beacon, or east towards the Fleet Lagoon. First’s X53 Jurassic Coaster bus serves the village and Hive Beach.
