Moreton

Frome valley village of Lawrence's grave and Whistler glass

Moreton lies on the River Frome about 8 miles (13 km) east of Dorchester. The civil parish had 347 residents at the 2021 census, so it is a small place, and the railway station sits a little way outside it, towards Crossways.

The village is bound up with T. E. Lawrence. He rented Clouds Hill cottage nearby from his cousins, the Framptons, while serving at Bovington Camp, and after his death in 1935 he was buried at Moreton. His grave draws visitors from around the world. A seven-mile circular walk, the Lawrence of Arabia trail, starts and finishes at the Tank Museum at Bovington and passes through the village.

St Nicholas church has windows designed and engraved by Sir Laurence Whistler over about 30 years. They replaced the plain green glass fitted after a German bomb hit the church in 1940. The Frampton family have been lords of the manor since at least the 14th century, and James Frampton (1769 to 1855) was responsible for the prosecution of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

The Jubilee Trail passes through the village. A pedestrian bridge spans a shallow ford on the Frome and leads to a number of short forest walks. Dorchester is 8 miles to the west.
