A sheltered bay with a town behind it

Swanage Bay curves round beneath the town, and the council describes Central Beach as a gently shelving, golden sandy beach. The town sits at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, about 6 miles south of Poole, and the Victorian pier stands on the front. In 2026 the beach flew a Blue Flag for the 25th year running and also held a Seaside Award, as Swanage Town Council reported.

Swimming and lifeguards

RNLI lifeguards patrol Central Beach in the summer season. The council publishes the dates and hours on its beach page, so check them before you plan a swim, because cover does not run all year. The beach has a marked craft-free area. As on any open beach, treat swimming with caution and stay near the lifeguards when they are on duty.

Dogs

From 1 May to 30 September dogs are not permitted on Central Beach. From 1 October to 30 April dogs are allowed on the beach.

Monkey Beach, a small pebble beach between the Stone Quay and the pier, welcomes dogs all year. Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade and surrounding roads at all times. Check the council’s beach page before you travel, as dog rules are set by order and can change.

Parking and facilities

All five visitor car parks in the town centre are pay and display, owned and run by Swanage Town Council, and two large long-stay car parks sit near the beach. Visit Dorset’s parking page lists four electric vehicle charging bays at Main Beach car park and two at Mermond Place.

The seafront has cafes, kiosks, toilets, showers and free drinking water refill points. Beach huts can be hired year-round from two areas near the beach, each with seating and an electricity supply. Visit Dorset lists wheelchair-accessible toilets on Shore Road and a Changing Places toilet at North Beach car park.

Getting onto the sand

Gentle slopes lead onto the sand next to the Banjo Pier and Clocktower, with steps and handrails elsewhere. Beach matting is laid in summer for those who find soft sand hard going.
