The quieter neighbour of Durdle Door
Man O’War Beach is the crescent immediately east of Durdle Door. The two are reached from the same cliff-top car park but they are different beaches. Durdle Door is a shingle beach under the famous rock arch. Man O’War is a mix of sand and shingle in a curved cove, with Durdle Door headland to the west and Man O’ War Head to the east.
Getting down
The beach is on the Lulworth Estate, which describes the final descent as steep and not suitable for people with disabilities, and recommends trainers or walking boots. The Estate lists refreshment kiosks, souvenirs and toilets in the car park area, which also serves Durdle Door. Check the Lulworth Estate website for the car park arrangements and charges. The cove also connects to the South West Coast Path, so walkers can arrive along the coast.
Swimming
The Lulworth Estate describes the sea here as gentle for swimming and paddling. No lifeguard cover is listed, so take the usual care and watch the tide and weather.
Dogs
The Lulworth Estate says dogs are allowed, and Dorset Council’s walking dogs on beaches page lists Man O’War Beach as open to dogs all year round. The council’s dog order, which runs to the end of 2026, requires owners to pick up dog mess. Rules can change, so check the page before travelling.
Along the coast
Lulworth Cove sits a short way west and is covered on the Lulworth Cove page.
