Swanage Carnival fills the town for eight days, from Saturday 31 July to Saturday 7 August 2027. The organisers promise more than 100 events in the week, and the programme is free to enjoy. All proceeds go to local charities, with more than 20 of them supported.
The week builds towards two set pieces. The carnival procession is the centre of it, with floats, music and community groups moving through the town. The firework finale closes the week. In 2026 the procession had 26 floats and the week included three firework displays, so there is more than one chance to catch a display if you cannot stay for the end.
Between those, the programme is a mix of the odd and the familiar. The wheelbarrow race sends costumed teams of two through the streets, stopping at pubs along the way; in 2026 it ran on the Friday evening and drew a record number of teams. Other events in 2026 included a bay swim, a four-mile fun run, a silent disco, a vintage and classic car show and air displays. The 2027 theme has not been announced yet, and the carnival’s secretary has said the 2027 carnival will be the last on Sandpit Field as it is known today.
