A county museum on four floors
Dorset Museum and Art Gallery stands on High West Street in Dorchester and spreads across four floors. The museum looks after four million objects covering 250 million years of Dorset’s natural and cultural heritage. It opened in 1846 in Judge Jeffreys’ Lodgings on the same street, and a Gothic-style building by G. R. Crickmay became its permanent home in 1883.
The four galleries
The Natural Dorset gallery covers 250 million years of the county’s geology, landscapes, habitats and wildlife. The museum also has on permanent display the skull of Pliosaurus kevani, a giant marine reptile recovered from the Dorset coast near Weymouth. Pliosaurus was a giant ocean predator with a skull of more than 2 metres, and this species was named after its finder, Kevan Sheehan. People’s Dorset runs from the Palaeolithic to the present day, and Artists’ Dorset shows paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, textiles and decorative art.
Hardy’s Dorset
The Thomas Hardy Memorial collection was gifted to the museum in 1937. The Hardy’s Dorset gallery includes a recreation of his study, with the desk and belongings from Max Gate, and original manuscripts that you can browse as digital copies on touchscreens. Other rooms show childhood toys, family portraits and musical instruments.
Getting there and getting in
There is no parking on site. The museum names the Top o’ Town car park as the nearest option, and Dorchester’s two railway stations are both under 12 minutes’ walk away. The main entrance on High West Street is step-free, and a passenger lift serves every area except the Library. Accessible toilets are on every floor, and the accessibility page gives the full details.
The TASTE cafe is on site. A standard ticket includes unlimited entry for one year, so a second visit can be a different gallery. Check current opening times and prices on the museum’s website before you go.
