Old Higher Lighthouse Stopes Cottage

Stopes Cottage stands at Portland Bill, on the end of the Isle of Portland. It is a single-storey cottage linked to the Old Higher Lighthouse by a long corridor, and it is named after Dr Marie Stopes, the lighthouse's former owner. The south-facing sitting room, kitchen and twin bedroom all have sea views. The nearest shop is 2 miles away and the pub is a 5 minute walk.

Everything is on one floor. The double and the twin bedrooms each have a basin, and the walk-in shower and WC sit alongside a separate basin and WC. The kitchen with dining area has an electric oven and hob, a microwave, a dishwasher and a washing machine, and an indoor airer and outdoor drying line. A travel cot, a highchair and a stairgate can be provided, and a welcome pack includes tea, coffee, milk, fruit and pastries or muffins.

Outside are a lawned area and a patio with garden furniture and an ornamental fish pond. Guests share an outdoor heated swimming pool with a Jacuzzi, open May to September, and access to the lighthouse observatory by steep steps. The owners ask guests to supervise children, given the pond and the cliff. Parking is ample, for cars and boats. It sits next to a sister cottage, and the two together sleep eight.

Neither pets nor smoking are allowed. It suits a couple or a family of four who want everything on one floor and a pool in the warmer months.
